University Assistant (post doc)
at the Department of Government
to 28.02.2026.

The Institute of Government, a sub-unit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, has a vacancy for a university assistant (post doc) in the field of "Comparative Political Institutions". The research focus lies in the field of party competition.

Duration of employment: 4 year/s
Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves
- Developing and strengthening an independent research profile
- Involvement in current and planned research projects on party competition
- Conducting independent research in the field of party competition with the aim to publish in leading international journals (SSCI)
- Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
- Independent teaching of courses in the BA and MA study programme as defined by the collective agreement
- Involvement in the department administration
- Supervision of students
- Doctoral degree/Phd degree in political science
- Excellent knowledge of quantitative methods in the social sciences (data collection & data analysis) including causal inference
- Excellent knowledge of the programming language R
- International publications in the field of party and electoral politics (especially in leading SSCI journals)
- High level of written and oral expression
- Very good command of written and spoken English

In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have
- Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning
- Experience in soliciting and participating in research projects
- International (outside Austria) professional experience in research and teaching
Desirable qualifications are
- Dissertation in the field of party and electoral politics
- Experience in teaching substantial and methods courses
- Experience in the supervision of BA or MA theses
- Experience in academic self-administration
- Ability to work in a team
